Where to Stay on St. John: Cruz Bay, Coral Bay or Somewhere Between?

Choose the area before choosing the property. A villa can have a spectacular view and a driveway that changes every dinner plan. A Cruz Bay rental can be geographically close to town and still require a steep walk home.

Area comparison

Central Cruz Bay

Best for visitors without a rental vehicle, frequent boat trips, walkable restaurants, and short stays. Ask for the actual walking route to the ferry, including hills and stairs.

Getting here in the first place means a ferry from Red Hook (about 20 minutes, roughly $8.15 one-way for a nonresident adult) or the more limited Crown Bay run from near Charlotte Amalie. Plan the airport-to-ferry taxi leg with a buffer; see the St. John travel guide.

Gallows Point and Frank Bay

Gallows Point provides oceanfront condominium-style lodging within walking distance of central Cruz Bay and operates Ocean 362 on-site.

Great Cruz Bay and the Westin

The Westin offers villas, pools, restaurants, recreation, and resort amenities. The route to central Cruz Bay is not a practical routine walk for most visitors, so use taxis or a vehicle.

Residential villa areas west of town

Chocolate Hole, Rendezvous, Fish Bay, Gifft Hill, Bethany, and Contant provide more space and views but generally require a vehicle. Fish Bay in particular trades walkability for quieter, more residential surroundings. Ask about the final driveway, not only the neighborhood road.

Mid-island: Estate Carolina and Centerline Road

A Centerline Road (Route 10) base, including the Estate Carolina area, reduces backtracking between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. It is a strong choice for travelers who want quiet and plan to drive daily.

Drifters, at 71 Estate Carolina, fits naturally into this area as a breakfast, lunch, smoothie, or early-evening stop — open daily 9 AM–6 PM, with parking that is generally easier to find than in downtown Cruz Bay.

Coral Bay

Best for repeat visitors, Salt Pond, Ram Head, East End, quiet mornings, and travelers who accept driving for groceries and nightlife. Coral Bay is reached from Centerline Road via Route 107, a winding route with some unpaved sections.

Do not choose Coral Bay based only on a map label. A villa's exact hillside, road, and distance from the main route determine convenience.

East End

Choose it when seclusion is the purpose and everyone agrees to longer drives and limited spontaneous transportation.

Cinnamon Bay

Cinnamon Bay is the established National Park campground, reached via North Shore Road (Route 20). Camping elsewhere on park land is prohibited.

A note on timing
