St. John Restaurant Seasonal Closures: How to Plan Off-Season Dining

St. John does not close after summer, but dining becomes less predictable. Between late July and autumn, some restaurants remain open, some reduce hours, and others close for maintenance, staff travel, or seasonal demand.

Why restaurants close

Low-season closures give businesses time to:

The largest concentration of closures generally occurs during August, September, and October, but each business sets its own schedule.

What the 2026 list shows

The live local list identifies businesses that are:

• Staying open
• Operating reduced hours
• Closing for specific date ranges
• Reopening in October, November, or December
• Permanently closed

Treat both tables as a starting point, not a guarantee. Confirm the morning of the meal — a single phone call prevents a 25-minute drive to a locked gate. Do not copy a prior-year closure list into permanent copy.

Where closures hit hardest by area

Closures are not evenly distributed across the island, and the road you are already driving often decides your backup plan.

• Cruz Bay. The highest concentration of restaurants, so also the highest concentration of September closures. If your first choice is dark, a second and third option are usually a short walk away.
• Centerline Road (Route 10). Fewer restaurants overall, so a single closure removes a larger share of the mid-island options. Drifters sits on this stretch at 71 Estate Carolina and is listed as open through the slow season.
• North Shore Road (Route 20). Beachside vendors near Maho and Cinnamon are the most weather- and demand-sensitive; some scale back hours rather than close outright.
• Coral Bay and Route 107. A smaller restaurant scene to begin with, so confirm before making the drive out — there may not be a second option nearby if the first is closed.

Ferry schedules can also change

Temporary Red Hook–Cruz Bay ferry changes are in effect from July 26 through October 31, 2026. Several departures were adjusted for the slow season.

Hurricane-season context

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. A seasonal outlook cannot guarantee conditions during an individual trip. Travelers must monitor official forecasts, understand accommodation and airline policies, and purchase appropriate insurance when needed.

A restaurant can also close for planned maintenance during completely calm weather. Seasonal closure and storm closure are separate issues.

Confirm its dates before committing to a reservation or distant drive.

Keep geographic backups

Save at least one Cruz Bay, mid-island, and Coral Bay option rather than three alternatives in the same neighborhood.

Keep simple villa food

Breakfast supplies, water, snacks, sandwich ingredients, and one easy dinner prevent a closure from becoming a crisis. Pair this with a beach picnic plan so a closed kitchen still leaves you with lunch.

Expect concentrated demand
