Vegan and Vegetarian Breakfast on St. John: A Practical Guide
Find vegan and vegetarian breakfast on St. John, including tofu scramble, vegan sausage, avocado toast and practical ordering advice.
· 3 min read · The Drifters Team
Vegetarian breakfast is easy to find because eggs, pancakes, yogurt, and avocado toast appear across St. John menus. Vegan breakfast requires more attention: butter, cheese, eggs, milk, honey, and shared cooking fats can appear in dishes that initially look plant-based.
The strongest order is usually a meal designed as vegan rather than a conventional breakfast with every central ingredient removed.
Drifters' dedicated vegan breakfast
Tell Me You're a Vegan contains seasoned tofu scramble, crispy potatoes, spinach, mushrooms, black beans, and jalapeños in a tortilla, with cucumber salad. A corn tortilla is available.
The dish works as a complete meal because the tofu and black beans provide substance while the vegetables and potatoes give it the texture and variety of a full breakfast.
The standard tortilla is marked as containing gluten. Guests avoiding both animal products and gluten can request the corn tortilla and still discuss cross-contact separately.
Drifters sits on Centerline Road at 71 Estate Carolina, roughly midway between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and serves breakfast daily from 9–11:30 AM before the all-day menu begins.
Vegan sausage as an option—not an automatic vegan meal
Drifters lists vegan sausage as a protein choice for several breakfast plates and sandwiches.
Replacing meat with vegan sausage does not automatically make the complete dish vegan. Eggs, cheese, bread, butter, sauces, or cooking surfaces can still involve animal products.
Ask:
- Can egg and cheese be omitted?
- Does the bread contain dairy, egg, or honey?
- Are the potatoes cooked with butter or animal fat?
- Is vegan sausage cooked beside meat?
- Can vegetables, avocado, or black beans replace removed components?
Vegetarian choices at Drifters
Bravo Avocado
Sourdough, smashed avocado, everything seasoning, and chili flakes. Eggs or smoked salmon can be added for non-vegan diners.
Parlez-Vous Parfait
Greek yogurt, honey-oat granola, and seasonal berries. It is vegetarian, not vegan, because it contains dairy and honey.
El Vagabundo
Eggs, cheddar, hash browns, avocado, sour cream, and salsa. Vegetarian as published, but not vegan.
Like Buttah
Buttermilk pancakes with butter and maple syrup. Vegetarian, not vegan.
Other current St. John options
Cruz Bay Landing publishes a Veggie Tofu Scramble on its brunch menu and operates brunch from 7 AM–2 PM. A strict vegan diner should confirm the toast, potatoes or greens, dressing, and cooking surface.
Sun Dog Cafe advertises vegan choices and publishes a dietary key. Its current brunch runs from 9 AM–11 AM Monday–Saturday and 9 AM–noon Sunday.
Those locations serve early or walkable Cruz Bay needs and generally require navigating downtown parking; see our Cruz Bay parking guide. Drifters serves the North Shore and Centerline Road driving day, with on-site parking that is usually simpler than a downtown stop.
Planning a vegan-friendly day around breakfast
If breakfast is at Drifters, the natural pairing is a North Shore beach morning first — Trunk Bay or Hawksnest are both a short drive down Route 20 — followed by breakfast on the way toward Coral Bay on Centerline Road. This avoids backtracking into Cruz Bay before continuing east. For families combining the two, see St. John with kids.
Do not assume every smoothie is vegan
A smoothie can contain yogurt, cow's milk, whey, honey, chocolate with dairy, or Nutella. Drifters publishes the main ingredients in seven blends, but strict vegans should confirm the liquid base and sweetener. The Indulgence contains Nutella and must not be described as vegan.
