Where to Eat Near Maho Bay: A Local Guide to Breakfast and Lunch

Find breakfast and lunch near Maho Bay, including beachside food, smoothies, takeout and a practical mid-island stop at Drifters.

· 3 min read ·

Maho Bay is one of St. John's easiest beach days to overcomplicate. The water is close to the road, the bay invites people to stay longer than planned, and hunger usually arrives after the group has already unpacked every towel and snorkel mask.

The practical food plan has three versions: eat directly across from the beach, have a complete breakfast before reaching Maho, or leave the sand for a proper lunch on the drive between the North Shore, Coral Bay, and Cruz Bay.

Quick answer: what food is available near Maho Bay?

Little Fish opened beside Maho Crossroads in 2026, directly across North Shore Road from Maho Bay. It is a bar, not a kitchen — Little Fish does not serve food, so plan drinks there and food elsewhere. Maho Crossroads combines casual food and drinks with seating, shopping, games, and beach-equipment rentals. Drifters is a separate sit-down option on Centerline Road at the former Colombo's site, approximately 15 minutes east of Cruz Bay and positioned for travelers moving between Maho, Coral Bay, and Cruz Bay.

Getting to Maho: the drive itself

Maho Bay sits on North Shore Road (Route 20), between Cinnamon Bay and Francis Bay. The road is narrow with almost no shoulder, and cars frequently stop in the travel lane to drop off passengers or gear right at the water's edge — expect to slow down and wait rather than pass. Parking is informal roadside pull-offs rather than a lot; arriving before mid-morning makes a real difference in high season. Remember that most rental Jeeps are left-hand-drive even though St. John traffic keeps to the left, which takes some adjustment on this stretch's curves.

Eat directly across from Maho when convenience comes first

Little Fish (drinks only)

Little Fish sits directly across the road from the bay and is the easiest place to get a cold drink without moving the vehicle. Do not plan a meal around it: Little Fish does not serve food. Its daytime hours can change with season, staffing, and weather, so check its current channels before relying on it.

Choose Little Fish when the group wants a drink between swims and is getting food from the Maho Crossroads vendors, a cooler, or a proper sit-down stop on the way out.

Maho Crossroads

Maho Crossroads functions as a beach-day base rather than a formal dining room. Its official site highlights food, drinks, shaded seating, games, a boutique, chair rentals, and watersports services.

Choose it when different members of the group want to eat at different times or combine lunch with beach rentals. Because Little Fish is drinks-only, Maho Crossroads is the food option immediately at the bay.

If the group wants a table, shade, restrooms, and a full plate rather than a paper tray, plan the meal around the drive instead — see our Cruz Bay to Coral Bay food stop guide.

Eat at Drifters before the beach when the group needs a full breakfast

Drifters opens daily at 9 AM. Its breakfast menu includes conventional egg plates, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, avocado toast, a yogurt parfait, a tofu-scramble wrap, and chicken-and-waffle sliders. The menu also lists vegan sausage, gluten-free bread, lettuce wraps, and corn-tortilla alternatives.

A complete breakfast before Maho works especially well for families, late-starting groups, and anyone who would rather reach the beach fed than build the day around snacks.

Useful pre-beach orders include:

  • Wake Up Call: a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, and a choice of bacon, sausage, or vegan sausage.
  • El Vagabundo: eggs, cheddar, hash browns, avocado, sour cream, and salsa in a tortilla; a corn tortilla is available.
  • Tell Me You're a Vegan: tofu scramble, potatoes, spinach, mushrooms, black beans, and jalapeños.
  • Bravo Avocado: sourdough, smashed avocado, everything seasoning, and chili flakes, with optional eggs or smoked salmon.
  • Mango Bango: mango, lime, and banana.

Guests with medical allergies should discuss ingredients and cross-contact directly with the server. Menu substitutions do not create a dedicated allergen-free kitchen.

Leave Maho for lunch when everyone needs a reset

Drifters' all-day menu begins at 11:30 AM, while breakfast remains available under the restaurant's published "9 AM–Whenever" format. Current site highlights include the D-Money Smash, Oh Me Oh Mahi, grilled chicken ciabatta, smoothies, cocktails, and wellness shots.

The value of leaving Maho is not only the food. A sit-down stop provides shade, restrooms, on-site parking, a change of elevation, and time out of the sun. It also prevents the common mistake of returning all the way to downtown Cruz Bay solely because nobody planned lunch.

Beach-day details worth knowing before you commit to Maho

  • Sun and shade: Maho's tree line offers some shade near the road, but the water itself is fully exposed. Reapply sunscreen after swimming and bring a hat for anyone hanging out on the sand between swims.
  • Mosquitoes and no-see-ums: the vegetation and calm water around Maho can bring out biting insects at dawn and dusk; midday visits avoid most of this.
  • Sea turtles: Maho is one of the more reliable spots on the island to see grazing sea turtles. Stay at least six feet away, never chase or touch them, and do not block their path to the surface.
  • Water conditions: Maho is typically calm and well protected, which is part of why it suits families and less confident swimmers, but conditions can still change with wind direction, so take a look before committing to a long swim out.
