Healthy Food on St. John: Smoothies, Avocado Toast and More
Find lighter and plant-forward food on St. John, including real-fruit smoothies, tofu scramble, avocado toast, salads and customizable meals.

"Healthy food" is not a precise restaurant category. One traveler wants a plant-based breakfast. Another needs protein after a hike. Someone preparing for a boat trip wants a meal that will not feel heavy on the water.
A useful guide describes ingredients, portions, and adaptability without assigning unsupported medical benefits or calorie claims.
Drifters' seven smoothies
Drifters publishes seven real-fruit smoothie combinations and offers $1 add-ins including chia, flax, matcha, and spirulina. Drifters is at 71 Estate Carolina on Centerline Road, open daily 9 AM–6 PM.
- Lean & Green: avocado, passion fruit, and moringa
- Mango Bango: mango, lime, and banana
- What's Up Doc?: carrot, turmeric, and ginger
- Sour Puss: soursop, lemongrass, and coconut
- Beet It: beet, strawberry, and basil
- Guava Iguana: guava, tamarind, and lime
- The Indulgence: peanut, chocolate, and Nutella
Do not describe these as detoxes, cures, fat-burning drinks, or treatments. The correct copy explains the ingredients and flavor profile.
Strict vegans should confirm the liquid base and sweetener. The Indulgence contains Nutella and must not be labeled vegan.
Wellness shots
Drifters also offers wellness shots alongside its coffee and smoothie program. As with the smoothies, describe the ingredients and flavor rather than making a medical claim; ask staff for the current shot options since small-batch offerings can change.
Lighter and plant-forward breakfast choices
Bravo Avocado
Sourdough, smashed avocado, everything seasoning, and chili flakes, with optional eggs or smoked salmon.
Tell Me You're a Vegan
Tofu scramble, potatoes, spinach, mushrooms, black beans, jalapeños, tortilla, and cucumber salad.
Parlez-Vous Parfait
Greek yogurt, honey-oat granola, and seasonal berries. This is vegetarian, not vegan.
Custom egg plates
Vegan sausage, gluten-free bread, and lettuce wraps are available. Guests can select the meal based on hunger and dietary needs rather than choosing only from a separate "health" category.
Other current plant-forward choices on St. John
Sun Dog Cafe publishes Vanessa's Vegan Bowl with roasted eggplant, broccoli, black beans, jasmine coconut rice, and greens.
Cruz Bay Landing publishes a Veggie Tofu Scramble, avocado toast, and vegetable-forward breakfast choices.
The Tap Room allows tofu, portobello, chicken, or mahi additions to salads and offers plant-based burger substitutions.
The Longboard in Cruz Bay builds its menu around fresh fish, poke-style bowls, ceviche, and vegetable sides — one of the easiest places on the island to eat light without ordering a salad.
Ocean 362 at Gallows Point serves fish-forward plates and vegetable sides in a setting where you can ask for grilled rather than fried.
Sam & Jack's Deli is the practical choice for salads, grain-based sides, and sandwiches you can take to the beach; it also solves the "half the group wants a picnic" problem.
Maho Crossroads keeps casual, fruit-forward options at the beach itself. Its neighbor Little Fish is a bar and does not serve food.
Starfish Market and Dolphin Market both carry produce, yogurt, pre-made salads, and bulk water. A villa breakfast plus one strong restaurant meal is usually healthier and cheaper than three restaurant meals — see our St. John on a budget guide.
Building a light day around a boat charter
Charter days reward a lighter breakfast and steady hydration rather than a heavy plate right before boarding. If the day includes a USVI or BVI charter, Quest VI lists local operators and top-rated providers, which makes it easier to confirm departure time and plan the meal around it rather than rushing a big breakfast at the dock.
Build the meal for the day
Before snorkeling
Choose avocado toast, tofu scramble, eggs, fruit, or a moderate smoothie paired with water.
After hiking
Use a complete meal with protein, carbohydrates, and fluids rather than treating a wellness shot as lunch. Reef Bay and the Ram Head trail near Coral Bay are long enough that a proper meal afterward matters more than a snack.
Before a boat trip
A parfait, avocado toast, or moderate breakfast sandwich is generally easier than the heaviest fried plate.
During a long beach day
A smoothie can be refreshing, but it does not replace drinking water throughout the day. Carry more water than you think you need; heat and salt water dehydrate faster than most visitors expect.
