The Wellness Shot, Honestly: Turmeric, Ginger, and Why We Pour Four
What's actually in a turmeric-ginger shot, what the research does and doesn't say, and when to order one on St. John.
· 5 min read · The Drifters Team
A wellness shot is a small, cold, concentrated pour of raw ingredients — turmeric, ginger, citrus, sometimes cayenne or apple — designed to be drunk in one go. We pour four of them at Drifters, and they're some of the first things off the pass most mornings. This is what's actually in them, what the research does and doesn't say about turmeric-ginger-shot benefits, and when it makes sense to order one on St. John.
Fair warning: we make drinks, not medical claims. The interesting thing about these shots isn't a miracle promise — it's that the ingredients are, individually, well-studied and worth understanding.
What's actually in a turmeric-ginger shot
- Fresh turmeric root
- The active compound is curcumin. Studied for anti-inflammatory effects; bioavailability jumps significantly when paired with black pepper (piperine) and a little fat.
- Fresh ginger root
- Gingerol is the compound most researched for nausea, digestion, and general anti-inflammatory effect. Fresh, not powdered, is the meaningful difference.
- Cold-pressed citrus
- Orange or lemon. Vitamin C, yes, but the real job here is balancing the pungency so you can drink the shot without wincing.
- A pinch of black pepper
- The piperine that makes curcumin actually usable by your body. Small amount, big role.
- Optional heat
- A whisper of cayenne on some builds. Warms the throat, opens the sinuses.
How they taste, and when to order which
The four we pour on the current Drifters menu map to four different mornings.
The Wake-Up — turmeric, ginger, orange, pepper. Our default. Bright, spicy, easy to drink. Order this if you were on the deck a little late the night before.
The Reset — ginger, lemon, cayenne. Sharper, hotter, no turmeric. Order this if your stomach is unsettled from the ferry or a long travel day.
The Immunity — turmeric, ginger, orange, elderberry. Rounder, slightly sweet. Order this on day three of the trip when you can feel the sun and salt catching up.
The Grounding — turmeric, ginger, apple, lemon. The gentlest. Order this as a pre-breakfast pour or right before a long hike.
“The shot isn't the point. The pause you take when you drink it is.”
The honest case for wellness shots on St. John is small and specific: they're a 30-second ritual that makes you slow down before a long, hot, beautiful day. Whether they meaningfully reduce inflammation for you personally is a longer conversation and depends on how often you drink them. What we can say is that we make them with fresh root every morning, and they're built to be part of a rhythm — beach, shot, breakfast, beach — not a supplement stack.
See the full lineup on the menu, or come read the day's board on the deck. We usually have all four running through lunch.
Frequently Asked
- What are the benefits of a turmeric-ginger shot?
- Turmeric contains curcumin, which has documented anti-inflammatory effects; ginger aids digestion and has its own anti-inflammatory profile. The black pepper we add contains piperine, which increases curcumin bioavailability by up to 2000%. The honest scientific case is modest but real — especially with regular use.
- How often should you drink turmeric-ginger shots?
- Daily is fine for most people. The active compounds are water-soluble and don't accumulate the way fat-soluble supplements do. Start with 1 oz if you're new to ginger's kick; work up to 2 oz.
- Are wellness shots actually good for you?
- A shot of fresh turmeric, ginger, and citrus is genuinely useful — anti-inflammatory, digestive support, vitamin C. Pre-bottled shots with added sugar or fillers are much less so. Freshness matters more than dose.
- When is the best time to drink a wellness shot?
- Morning, on an empty or nearly empty stomach, before your coffee. That's when the citrus and ginger hit hardest and the anti-inflammatory compounds have the cleanest path.
- What are the four wellness shots at Drifters?
- Our four are turmeric-ginger-citrus (the anti-inflammatory classic), pure ginger (digestion and cold-recovery), immunity (elderberry, echinacea, citrus), and greens (celery, cucumber, lemon, ginger). Order the turmeric-ginger for the morning after a long day.
